Higher & Lower Magick

I posted a thread regarding the nature of Invocation & Evocation and thought it prudent to give an explanation of the terms commonly described as Higher and Lower Magick.

So in its most simple sense magick can be looked at in two very basic catgories.

Numerous persons describe the theortetical origins of both high and low magick.

One theory was that high magick was that of the court of the sorcerer using all the regalia and pomp of ceremony, and low magic was that practiced in the lowlands was that of the witches, where they used objects from their surroundings, wooden tools , roots and herbs.

The above paragraph is somewhat true, however it suggests a dogma and prejudice, where the witch is not capable of high art. And that of course is could not be further from the truth.

Wicca described as the pagan religion of nature is of course becoming more and more popular or at least we may no longer fear the strong arm of the law since the witchcraft act was repealed in 1951. (It should be noted here that the law still stands in Northern Ireland and this act was almost as stupid as the papal bull that stated that all left handed people were the spawn of Satan.)

To clarify Satanism is where a Catholic or Christian Person consider themselves to be evil as their allegiance has switched to the devil.

Where here Wicca, Witchcraft, Pagansim is completely adverse to such base notions.

The writings of Gerald Gardener, Doreen Valiente, Sybil Leek and the works of Alexander Sanders have gone a long way as well as many others to build and develop ceremony, effective ritual and magick practice.

1. Low Magic is the art of producing effects on the lower planes and generally include, love, money, good luck/fortune, healing, fertility, agriculture, curses, invisiability etc.

2. High Magick begins with invocations and evocations that effect the higher and super mental planes. These deal with progression, mentally, spriritually and magickally.

From the above then it is obvious that a simple banishing ritual is a form of reverse invocation that are included in all magickal rituals. viz Banishing then Invocation and depending on the nature or the work evocation.
